GeoJSON (Geographic JavaScript Object Notation)

GeoJSON, short for Geographic JavaScript Object Notation, is an open standard format for representing geospatial data structures using JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). It is widely used for encoding and exchanging geographic information in a human-readable and machine-friendly format.

In GeoJSON, geographic features are represented as JavaScript objects, making it easy to work with geospatial data in web applications and other software environments. Common types of features include points, lines, and polygons, each defined by a set of coordinates.

The simplicity and flexibility of GeoJSON make it a popular choice for sharing geospatial data on the web. It is commonly used in web mapping applications to display interactive maps, display location-based information, and facilitate data exchange between different systems.

GeoJSON supports not only basic geometry but also properties that can be associated with each feature. For example, a GeoJSON feature representing a city might include properties such as its name, population, and administrative division.

Overall, GeoJSON provides a lightweight and versatile means of representing geospatial data, making it accessible to a wide range of developers and applications, from simple web maps to complex geospatial analysis tools.
